Magazine proposal

Magazine Proposal from EcesuOzevinASmedia

(View in full screen or watch on the slideshare website for best quality)

My magazine is going to be a vintage magazine from the 60s to 80s. The reason I've chosen to do this kind of magazine is because I want to do something different than a modern R&B or Hip Hop magazine. I want my magazine to be different and outstanding.

The Genre I've chosen for my magazine to be is Progressive Rock, Classic Rock and Rock and Roll (let's just say rock...) The artists that could be seen as examples for my magazine are Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd. Rock started around this time (1955), so it was a popular music genre to write about. A lot of teens and young adults were interested in this new music genre, that's why I think this magazine could have sold a lot around the 60s.

I am going to write a feature article (interview) written in new journalism/gonzo journalism. Gonzo Journalism is a style of writing where the journalist actually participates in the event or circumstance. A normal journalist is an objective outsider who simply observes and reports a newsworthy event, Gonzo is an active participant in or instigator of that event. In Gonzo Journalism the journalist is also considered newsworthy. The purpose of gonzo journalism would be to produce a brutally honest of highly subjective journalistic piece based on the real experience of a trained reporter writing from the inside.
For example: A normal journalist might interview drug dealer or addicts for an expose on the local drug trade, a gonzo journalist may actually participate in the shady deals and backroom exploits of a drug kingpin or a local gang.

The language I'm going to use is going to be conversational as the magazine is going to be a magazine for young people who have to stay interested, who can read the article easily without getting bored of too formal language.

I have noticed that vintage magazines have more text than pictures. Also I want to write the title of the article on the contents page very big and place a dot or rectangle in front of the text as it would be too distracting to write the title big and the first letter of the text big. The text is going to be very plain and I am going to make the background of the contents page a light brown colour so it will look as if it's written on old paper (see picture). Also I will place a quote in the middle of the text that has been said in the article or on the front cover in a teaser to draw more attention to it and make the article look more interesting.

The front cover is going to be colourful yet it has to look dusty as the quality of magazines and pictures were not as good as today 50 years ago. When I say colourful, I want the colours to be bright and outstanding yet there has to be this grey-ish or dusty tone about it. The colours have to be so bright that the whole cover looks like a drawing. I don't know how to exactly explain it, but as said, the colours should be popping and bright, but it has to look as if there is a plate of dusty glass on it.

The model on the front cover is going to be an iconic person such as Elvis or John Lennon who will be recognised and people will understand who I'm trying to picture when seeing the magazine. Also they will immediately understand what kind of magazine it is as the iconic person will tell people it is a singer. I am almost sure that I will photograph someone who is dressed as/looks like Elvis, and if that is going to be the person I well be creating, I will make a close up of the face. Also to make people sure that it is a music magazine, I am thinking about giving the model a microphone or an instrument in their hand(s).
As old magazines didn't have a lot of teasers, I will only put 2 to 4 teasers on the front cover. The fonts will be not too small or big, colourful and they have to fit into the picture, the colours have to go together with the model on the front cover.

The title is going to be RollingRock, as it has a little joke in it. It looks like Rolling Stones, also it has 'Rock Roll' in it which refers to Rock 'n' Roll. I want it to be written in groovy and retro letters (see slide 5/9) coloured in with again a colour that fits the front page as a whole. The model's head will be in front of it as it is going to be someone important and famous. It is going to be the biggest writing on the whole page as it is the most important and it has to stand out.

I want 'Nat Mags' to be the publisher of my magazine as it was established in 1910, before my magazine is going to be published. A lot of publishers are established later than when I want my magazine to be published. Also Nat Mags have published 19 magazines in the UK including Company, Cosmopolitan and Esquire, so this publisher is not a simple or unknown one.

My audience is going to be a young audience. I want the magazine to be a magazine that is popular in the high schools, colleges and universities. It has to be a magazine that all the teens and young adults talk about. The magazine might be read by 16 to 25 year olds with the same interests. It is going to be for both genders. The readers are going to be people who care a lot about the fashion that time, who go out to concerts, sock hops (school dances), drive in movies, drive in restaurants and who do a lot of activities to keep their young life busy. The music they will be listening to could be only rock, but it could also be everything else but rock while they are interesting in this new music genre. (Or the girls will just buy the magazine because Elvis (cover model) is handsome). They also might listen to boy bands like The Beatles or The Smiths.
Girls would wear skirts, levi's, penny loafers, tie dye, high wasted skirts and girly or light colours as boys would wear high wasted trousers, madras shirts (very popular that time!) or just sweaters. Haircuts would be flat-top, crew cut but especially long hair as this was considered rebellious in that time.

*** Vintage magazines are very simple yet attractive. My magazine is not going to be a magazine with a lot of pictures, colours and modernity. It is going to be interesting, pretty yet plain and simple. ***

Magazine newsstand task (Planning)

In the store I took the pictures there were a lot of magazines. They are placed near the entrance of the shop which attracts the people more. The women's magazines all have pink-girly colours which attracts women more. The same magazines are put in one booth and they are behind each other on the bottom and top shelf, the middle shelves have only magazines next to eachother. This is done so it won't look too crowded and you can have a clear overview over all the magazines with the most popular magazines placed in the front. The magazines placed in front of each other's names are clearly visible and on some magazines you can even see some coverlines. Also there are separate booths placed in front of the shelves in the front and sticked to them for other magazines, which are more eye-catching.

The green box with 'recommended read' is very eye-catching and they advertise this magazine to sell it more.

The TV section's magazines have darker and simpler colours such as black, red and blue. You can recognise what kind of magazines these are as all their names have something to do with TV or Soaps. Also here there is a green box which says it's a recommended read which will attract people more to that magazine.

Audience feedback and evaluation on college magazine (Planning)

FEEDBACK THAT I GOT:
I love your front cover and contents page , your cover lines are teasers are really eye catching and easy to understand, although i think that your image should have a connection with your cover lines and teasers please. Great work overall. (Vivian)

hi, I like your front cover and content page because your front cover links to the content page because of the colours you had used which went really well and your content page looks formal and easy to read. One thing I would say is to add few more images to your content page (Natasha)

hey I really like your contents and your front cover because first of all you've got exciting teasers(headings). rather than using one artist image you used more than one which is good and shows your creativity. You haven't got too many headlines as its easy to recognise that this is a college magazine. I like the way you laid it out, your layout looks well cool. However I would say make some space for other news or pictures as with more images it could have make it more interesting for the audience to buy. On the other side your contents looks like a original contents page especially for your audience as for them it would attract them to look at it. Its well organised and proper outlined in a clear way. You've numbered it using big fonts and you've got bigger images. Overall your contents page looks like an original magazine contents page but you could have puted as i said earlier bit more images to connect with the headings rather than writing the whole thing. (Fahmi)

THINGS I'VE LEARNED
The things I have learned from the feedbacks is that I should use more images on the contents page, because that would attract people more to it. This has been said twice, so I should pay more attention to it next time.

Also someone has said that my image should have a connection with my cover lines and teasers, what is also very helpfull.

Case studies (2)

SOLID ROCK

FRONT COVER
The front cover of this magazine is very unorganized and it looks unprofessional.
There is a band of 4 people who are photographed as a wide shot, and there is a wide shot photograph of another artist on the background with an arm blended over the two images. This is very confusing for the reader as it is not very obvious which person belongs to who.
The quality of the image of the band is much higher than the quality of the picture behind them, which drops the quality of the front cover too, as it looks unprofessional.
Also the images of the artists are all small, they cover only half of the page which isn't the norm as the cover model should be covering the whole page, maybe even the masthead.
Apart from the masthead, the images make the genre of this magazine the most obvious. An arm with a metal wristband, the make up of the single artist and the fact that he is carrying an electronic guitar states that this magazine is a rock magazine.
The masthead 'Solid(metal) (heavy)Rock' which is read as Solid Rock when talking about this magazine, is the biggest writing on the cover which states that that is the most important factor. Because the words 'metal' and 'heavy' are not very important, they are written in a dark colour which is not comfortably readable, yet the words 'Solid Rock' are very obvious and outstanding. The first place the customers eyes would go is the masthead, which is very important.
At first sight the cover lines look very unorganized, as there is 'Kiss' and 'Dave Lee Roth' are written across the page, which randomly coloured teasers in different fonts above it. But when you pay attention to the structure of the front cover, it is seen that 'Kiss' and 'Dave Lee Roth' are written next to the artists with that name. This could have done neater or there isn't even need for it, as it looks very unprofessional and unorganised.
The colour used the most on the frontcover is yellow, which is suppressed by the yellow sides of the line and the big yellow written masthead. If the cover would have been organised better, this would have drawn the public's attention, but there are too many colours used on the front cover which is seen in the background and masthead.

CONTENTS PAGE
According to the front cover, the contents page of this magazine is very basic and clean. Everything is neatly organised and put in place, except for the page numbers which are not written in order. The contents page does not contain any images which reflects the fact that this is an old magazine as most of the magazines I have crowded front covers but calm contents pages.
All the fonts and font  sizes are the same on this page which makes it, again, neat and organised. Also the title's of the pages have a clear description with what the reader should expect from the article.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
This double page spread is also very simple and neat. The only colours used are black, white and the image which containt red lightning. The journalism is in 4 columns with journalism written in first person which is inviting to the audience. The whole page contains journalism about Deff Leppard, which is a rock band. The way they have dressed and their hair is made up shows that this magazine is about rock. Also the dark colours used show easily the genre of this magazine.

MEDIA KIT
Weirdly enough there is no information on the internet about this magazine, therefore I couldn't find a media kit.

Case studies (1) + PRESS PACK

KERRANG!

These 3 'KERRANG!' magazines are all rock magazines from the 80s.

FRONT COVER
The green magazine in the middle is from 1987 and the price is 90 p, which's worth is now around 1.80 pound. The front cover looks basic and amature, as the fonts are not easily readable.

The masthead's colours are yellow and green, which suit the model's lightning and colours and the teasers. Under the masthead is the number of issue, the date and the price written in white with a small font. The reason these things are written with a small font is because if the price was written bigger, customers would first check the price to see if it's expensive or not. Now it doesn't seek as much attention so people will focus more on the front cover and the teasers. There are only two teasers and a list of 6 artists who appear in the magazine and information about a price to win written on the front cover. The 6 artists are all written in green under each other on the middle of the page, which will draw the customers' attention to it the most: also out of all cover lines these are the only green fonts. The two teasers are written in yellow as they both tell the customer something about an article written in the magazine. The white writing at the bottom and the top are both cover lines which offer the customer something. The cover line on the bottom speaks about a prize, the one at the top speaks about something that is given free together with the magazine. So every teaser and cover line is categorised with a colour. The font of the cover lines are barely readable which drops the quality of the magazine, yet they emphasize the fact that it's a rock magazine, which will draw the audience who want to buy a rock magazine their attention. Also the font sizes of all the cover lines are the same, so the audience will not get attracted to a specific cover line which is written in a larger font, which shows that the magazine creator has enough confidence from the buying audience. The fact that all the cover lines are placed on the left hand side of the page is because the magazines in the store are stacked side by side, with the left hand of the magazine showing, which also will draw the audience's attention. Also, as bar code's weren't used as much in the 80s there is none to find on the front cover.

The masthead 'KERRANG!' stands in front of the model, as he might not be too important to stand in front of the masthead or because his head does not reach the top of the page. The front cover exists of 3 colours, which are green, yellow and white. Also the model on the front cover has a green and yellow lightning over him. The slime dripping from the skeleton head is green and the lightning on his face is yellow, which suits the front cover's colour scheme perfectly. The cover model's shot type is a mid shot, which shows some part of the subject in more detail while still giving an impression of the whole subject. As this magazine is a rock magazine, the model looks scary yet like a rock star. His leather cloves, face expression, scary make up and the skeleton's head in his hand emphasize the fact that he is a rock star. His eyes are barely visible, but when you look close you can see he is looking in the camera lens, addressing the audience directly, looking from the corner of his eyes.

CONTENTS PAGE

Weirdly enough there is no organised contents page. This is the first page of the whole magazine: after this page the articles start. There are no pages given, yet there are small writings written about the artists and bands which appear further in the magazine. Every issue that is published in the 3 magazines I own have used the same layout, content, colours, columns and captions. This can not be called a contents page, yet it does give the reader an overview of what is going to appear in the magazine.
The colours used are grey for the background, white for the textboxes, red and yellow. The masthead 'mayhem' on this page is made of the colours red, yellow and black which are all found back on the double page spread. Except for the masthead on the page, all the big writings are all in a baseball-font, which don't suit the rock magazine as much as the font on the front cover, but it works.
The gutters between the writings and the images are narrow which might bug the reader, but otherwise the writings wouldn't have fit onto the pages.
The big image on the left page has captions on it which are placed around the model, which might draw the readers attention, as not only the writing, but also the colours are outstanding and more different and eye-catching than the other pictures on the page.
All the writings in the text boxes under the images apply to the artists and bands above them. Yet the most writing on the grey background are about tours and concerts, not about what is going to appear in the magazine, which the public might be more interested in.

DPS
I have chosen this double page spread because I have found a couple of mistakes I want to point out.
The model lays down horizontal on two pages, which gives the page a different lay out. It is a wide shot where it shows the whole model, only it's right foot is cut off the page as it didn't seem to fit. The light comes from above, which proposes of the sun's light as she is laying down on a roof. Also she is slightly covering her face with one hand. The only colours used in the image are black, white and orange, with blue on the background.
The thing that would have bugged me as the audience is the choice of colour in writing. The colour red does not fit enough to the picture, as the contrast between the colours of the picture and the writings do not go with each other. Also the pink and red writing clash with each other. The red writing on the blue background also do not read comfortable, which is the same case with the part where there are white dots in the blue background. It would have been better if the blue or white background were another colour, so the editor could have made the writings white or black so the reader could read it more easily.
There are three different fonts used on this page: the title, the preface and the text. The font of the title makes the article look chic and elegant, especially with the woman laying on the bottom of the page. Also in the text the same font is used for the initials across the text, but in pink, which again, is a colour clash and it would have been better if it was another colour.
Also the huge amount of space between the text and the model which is a waste of space, as there could have been placed more text.

LANGUAGE
The language used on the front cover is persuasive and it attracts the audience. The elementary sentence at the top which is at the same time an imperative sentence which gives a command, makes the customer wonder why to hold his head up. Is there a new album coming out? Did something happen to a artist?
Further on, the front cover only includes simple sentences with not too much information, yet enough for the reader to understand what it is about.

The language used in the magazine is formal and simple, easy readable yet interesting enough to hang on on it. As seen on the picture, they have changed words such as 'continues' to 'kontinuez' to make it look different. It suits the theme of the magazine (rock), as I personally think it really suits the genre.
The article the photograph I have taken is a feature article which is told in first person, which is written in persuasive language, which encourages the reader to read on. A lot of declaratives and short (and minor!) sentences are used within the articles in the magazine, which are simple, shot and easy to read with statements and facts in it. Also a lot of puns are used, which the writers probably have used to play on words and use comic connections between words.
The writing refers to a young audience who are interested in rock. It might be college or university students, but also older adults who go with the hype at that moment might read this magazine.

PUBLISHER
The magazine KERRANG! is published by the Bauer Media Group which is a multinational media company which is headquartered in Hamburg (Germany). This privately owned company was founded in 1875 and it operates in 16 countries worldwide.
H Bauer publishes many brands, which include 'Bella', 'Take a Break', 'That's life!', 'TVChoice' and 'Total TVGuide'. Also it publishes the magazines 'Q' and 'Kerrang!'.
They have their own radio and the Bauer Media Group has a 50% stake in the British television company Box Television (the other half is owned by Channel 4), with television channels such as '4Music', 'The Box' and 'Kerrang!'.

PRESS PACK - MEDIA KIT
This is the only information that is on the internet about Kerrang magazine.
The magazine is read almost equally by both genders, which is because the only theme in the magazine is Rock. The front cover does not contain any gender-aimed images which will attract both genders to it.
The age it is read by is mostly 15-24 which is mostly because the youth wants to stay up-to-date with fashion and music. The older people get, the less they read Kerrang magazine, which is seen in the image.
