Outcome of feedback (survey)

RED TEXT = EVALUATION OF ANSWERS

Q1: Which gender is this magazine aimed at?
·         Both
·         Both
·         Women
·         Both

My magazine is aimed at both genders, which 3/4 of people understood right. This means that I have accieved my goal in making obvious which gender the magazine is aimed at.

Q2: Which age is this magazine aimed at? E.g 16-26
·         18-30
·         21-24
·         16-26
·         18-25

My magazine is aimed at young adults between 16-26 years old. Everyone had it rougly right, as their average age they thought the magazine is aimed at is around 23. This means I have acchieved my goal in making obvious what age my magazine is aimed at.

Q3: Which music genre is represent in this magazine?
·         Rock
·         Rock
·         Rock
·         Rock

There is not much to say about this, as the cover already states that it's a rock magazine because of the masthead 'RollingROCK' and the teaser and journalistic piece which is about the king of ROCK&ROLL. Everyone had this right, this means that I have acchieved my goal in making obvious what genre my magazine is.

Q4: What do you like about the magazine?
·         Photography
·         Models
·         Other (please specify)that its an 80 magazine
------
·         Layout
·         Journalism
------
·         Layout
·         Photography
·         Colour scheme
------
·         Journalism

The participants like the photography (2), journalism (2) and layout (2) the most. The colour scheme and models got one vote. This means that I should have made the colour scheme of my magazine more interesting, which I can understand as I have only used red on the pages and only green and red on the front cover. Also the models aren't liked very much, as I have only used 2 models in the whole magazine. I should have made them more interesting to attract the audience to it.

Q5: What could be improved and how? E.g. font, colours, photography, journalism...
·         light shining on cover model is too bright
·         photography
·         journalism should be shorter and engaging and more images on the page with journalism
·         İ think alot of effort and time has been put into the managzine. İ also believe that the use of fonts is very appealing.

The first comment is on the light that is shone on the model on the front cover. I understand that it looks to bright compared with the dark background which might make the scheme look fake. Next time I should turn a flashlight off or turn it's light down. The second comment says that my photography could be improved too, which I refer to the bright light.
The third comment states that my journalism should be shorter and more engaging, which I don't agree on as I think my journalistic piece is in engaging emotive language which persuades the audience enough to make them read on. Also it is not too long as it covers only one page, which can be even too short according to real magazines. The same comments also says I should put more images on the page with journalism, which I, again, don't agree with as one whole page already consists of a photograph.

Q6: What has been improved? E.g. font, colours, photography, journalism... ***Compare Music Magazine to College magazine
·         you used more images on the contents page and it looks more professional and interesting and the front cover is a better quality
·         the font colours are good and I think compared to the college magazine it looks way better. Also the photography has been improved.
·         masthead has improved as in that its not boring and it has a different font photography is better because the college magazine has 3 people but the music magazine has 1 which makes eye contact with the camera
·         İ think the editor has hit the correct keys when making the magazine.

SEE EVALUATION TASK 7

Q7: Do you think my music magazine looks appropriate to publish as a real magazine? Why?
·         yes because it has the content and it attracts the audience. it looks like a real magazine because of the front cover
·         Yes because it has that professional look.
·         yes because the masthead rollingstone looks like the masthead of a rock magazine
·         Yes. İ think the magazine would of made a good hit in th date's it would of been suited to.

The first comment states that my magazine has a professional content and it attracts the audience, especially the front cover. This might be said because of the lay out being paralel and organised with no unneeded factors on the pages such as too much text and images. Also the fonts match the criteria of a professional, real music magazine.
The seccond comment states the same.
The third commentor thinks that the masthead looks like the masthead of a rock magazine, which I find is true as it has the bright and rebellious colour, content and font which matches the criteria of a rock magazine.
I can state that the fourth commentor has understood the purpose of my magazine the most, as he/she says it would have made a good hit in the time my magazine would have been published.

Q8: How real does my magazine look?
·         (no label)Looks like a real magazine
·         (no label)Looks like a real magazine
·         (no label)Looks like a real magazine
·         (no label)Looks like a real magazine

This question had 4 options which went from 'doesnt look like a real magazine' to 'looks like a real magazine'. All of the participants of this survey have voted for 'looks like a real magazine', which means I have achieved my goal in making my magazine look professional and real.

Final project (CLEAN POST)

OPEN IMAGES IN NEW TAB FOR BEST QUALITY

FEATURE ARTICLE:
KING OF ROCK&ROLL REBORN?
I am waiting in Los Angeles in an over-stuffed flamboyant house – the walls are full of music records and posters. I lose track of time while looking around me as there is so much to see. It could be the house of a music-obsessed teenager, but in fact it is the house of John himself.

He opened the door for me with a green health drink in his hand, giant hazel eyes sparkling as much as his giant golden ring he is wearing on his ring-finger. As always his hair was perfectly combed with every single string of hair in its place. Wearing leather and dark clothes made him look exactly like how I imagined him to look like: the younger and more relaxed version of the King of Rock & Roll.

What everyone really wants to know about John is why he has chosen to imitate such a historical and legendary character as Elvis Presley. Because folks, be honest: don’t they look alike?

How could John have imagined that his music career would grow to this level? The world got to know about him for the first time when seeing him on billboards all across Los Angeles.
‘’Yeah man, I was walking on the street, just about to buy some records for my collection, when a lady came up to me and asked if I wanted to appear on a billboard for the memorial of Elvis’’, he says with a half smile and it reminds me again how much he looks like Elvis and why all the girls have fallen for John.

He claims to always have had a bound with music and it was his dream to become big.
‘’People on the street started to recognize me and girls came up to me asking for my signature. I then understand this was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.’’
With the little money he had, he recorded a tune, which became his first hit single, and gave copies away on the streets of Los Angeles with the hope someone would find and sign him.
‘’I had given up hope after a month with no money left, when a man found me last year and actually wanted to sign me. The guy’s name was Samuel. Samuel Cornelius Phillips.’’
John nodded his head as I tried to stutter that he was also the producer of Elvis Presley.
‘’I’m blessed; Samuel has put so much effort in me. This was when I understood I have a connection with Elvis: my biggest idol.’’

All alone he struggled through the music industry, but becoming big wasn’t hard for him as he had the looks and charm, the voice and appearance to steal every girl’s heart.
‘’Nope. No family, I hadn’t even any relatives I knew around me. My friends have always been next to me, and they still are. Sometimes they even play behind me on stage.
‘’Everything went really fast the moment my first single came out. People started to call me ‘Second Elvis’ as I had been known for the first time as his duplicate.’’

As I observe him I try to compare him to Elvis Presley. Young and talented, confident and smart in the things he says. Yep, the King of Rock & Roll must have been reborn.
‘’Don’t say that. I can never cope to the actual legend, no one can. He was one in a million and will forever be. I’m just making my own dream come true. Music is my passion. Elvis is my statue. Samuel is my hero.’’

His first single ‘’Let Me Be Your Daddy’’ was very successful, but his second tune ‘I Want Her, Santa’ was the one that took place in the top 10 Christmas Hits. And not only did it hit the top 10; John also got to sing it on the Christmas Parade yesterday.
‘’That was truly amazing. The crowd, the stage, the atmosphere… The moment I entered the stage and I heard the crowd scream, or should I say women’’, he laughs, ‘’and before holding my hands up to greet them I immediately prayed to God and thanked him. I almost bursted into tears when the band started to play and the crowd’s voice got louder.’’

Though John is new and upcoming, yet very popular, he has released only two songs. How is it going to be with the tour he’s starting in January?
‘’That’s what makes the tour so unique. The audience doesn’t have a clue about the songs I’m going to perform.’’
The tour is going to last for 1 month.
‘’Yeah baby! Los Angeles, Vegas, New York, America… Here I come!’’ is what he yells and throws his fists in the air.

It wouldn't be fair for Jama to say he is trying to copy Elvis, yet the fact that he is signed by the same producer, looks and dances like him might confuse the public in what he is trying to do. Yet be honest people... Could you resist John Jama?

CHANGE I MADE: LEFT IS NORMAL QUALITY,
RIGHT IS THE 'VINTAGE QUALITY'

MAGAZINE WITHOUT NOISE (VINTAGE EFFECT)
The image on the left is clear and I added noise on the right to make the image look old.

My front cover is finished. It has come out the way I wanted it to be. As planned, I have made a christmas edition cover, which is recognised from the christmas tree in the back, the ''SPECIAL CHRISTMAS EDITION'' writing at the top and the colours I've chosen. To give the magazine a 80s, simple, yet interesting cover I have made a big teaser which will attract the public and two small and simple, basic cover lines which are still eye-catching. The small teasers I've written are all from the 1984's: Def Leppard is a 80s band and Queens single 'Thank God It Christmas' had been released in 1984. This also shows that this magazine is a christmas edition.  The masthead I have used is the right size and colour. Its colour suits the model's clothes and sunglasses, it gives a nice contrast to the page. On the bottom I have the same barcode as in my previous post which says R0771NGR0CK (RollingRock), which needs a little bit of analysation but is seen.To make my front cover look more vintage and old I have added a grain and noise effect to it which have made it look vintage. The price of my magazine is £0.75 which had in 1984 a worth around £2.

My double page spread also has noise added to both the picture and the page to make it look more old and drop the quality of it to reflect the fact that technology wasn't as good as not in the 80s. I haven't used any colour in my magazine except for the colour red which I have used in writing. On the top of the page the writing 'feature' shows the reader that it's a feature article and I have written the article in a professional way, how feature articles should be written. It is not written in question-answer style but in a fluent story line, first person of the interviewer. The writing is put in 4 columns which fit perfectly on the page with paragraphs yet no distractions on the right page, because I wanted to keep it clean with no lines or pictures through the text. That's why I put a big picture of John Jama on a stage on the left page, as there are no other pictures needed of him.

My contents page is also very clean and plain with organised titles and description under them, the most important titles with big writing and the less important ones in a smaller font under the other writings. Also I have decided to put the most important articles in front of the magazine, and the regulars and less important articles on a further page as the first pages are the first pages the reader reads. There are a couple pictures on the contents page with no title written to it, yet the page number is written on the pictures so the reader can easily find the article about that person. Also on the bottom of my contents page I have written information about the publisher an editors to add value to the page and make it look more professional.

Progress

25/11/13
Finishing my draft, ready to fill everything in...

05/12/13
I am about to finish my front cover. The only thing I need is a dark picture of a christmas tree where you can see the lights.
The colours I've used are red and green, as it's going to be a christmas edition. Also red fits the colours my model is wearing: the contrast between the red and the collar and glasses of my model fit wel.

My model is looking in the camera to directly address the audience. He looks inviting. I might change the model his head to be in front of the masthead, but I will change that later. Though I'm scared the masthead won't be seen enough and he he is a new icon in the music industry (see teaser: 'king of rock&roll reborn') and not important enough to stand in front of the masthead.

The teasers I've written are about Deff Leppard, which is an 80s magazine and about Queen's new Christmas song which is invented in 1984, the year the magazine is published.
The barcode on the bottom has the code 'R0771NG R0CK' which looks like 'RollingRock' (masthead).
The article I'm going to write on the double page spread is going to be about the model on the front cover named John Jama. The biggest teaser is about him, and it shows its exclusive. Also the main teaser is bigger than the masthead. I've tried to make the masthead bigger as that is the most important writing on the front page, but the writing is too long to make it any bigger, and if I can't make 'John Jama' smaller as it wont attract the audience enough.

10/12/13
I am almost done with my double page spreadrt. I have decided to make all the pictures in the magazine black and white to give it a more old-looking style. Some letters and writings are going to be in colour (red). Also I am going to make an extra a4 page with only writing as there doesn't fit enough writing on the double page spread. On that page I am also going to put a couple of pictures and I thought it would be better to make my DPS look interesting so people will start reading and go on on the next page without getting bored of it. I am going to make the quality as the pages (also contents page) the same as the front cover so it will look older.

Also the image on my DPS shows in bad quality but when it's exported to a JPEG it turns better. Me and my teachers don't know why this is happening. I have tried to drag it from photoshop, but when I do that the background becomes white though it is transparent in photoshop, and when I import it via 'place' in InDesign it becomes low quality.

16/12/13
The left page of my contents page is almost done. I only need to put in a couple of more regulars, and on the next page there are going to be more features and a lot of pictures of plates and other artists. The page number that I put on the pictures show where you can find the article about that artist with no description, only the top picture has a description in 'features'. The picture with '22' on it is John Jama, my model. He wears other clothes than the front cover, which makes him more interesting. I again photoshopped a christmastree/christmaslights behind him to give the page a christmas-like effect. The magazine is going to be around 80 pages and the regulars come as last as they are not as important as the exclusive features. The lay out I have used looks simple yet like a rock magazine, it looks also a bit like the RollingStones magazine's contents page. Again the colours that are used are black and white, and red as red is attractive and it suits to the Christmas edition of the magazine.

Photos taken

Pictures I might use or I am not going to use

Pictures I'm definitely going to use

Lightning, how I used the studio

I need to take a couple of pictures of a crowd and a christmas tree to edit the pictures. I am going to cut out the backgrounds of the pictures and edit them to make them look more professional, as I don't like the background too much.
I have used a dimmed flash and a golden reflector. Actually I needed a black backdrop, but I decided to take the pictures bright and edit them the way I want them to be.
Despite my model didn't wear the shoes and pants I asked him to wear, I have given him glasses and a wig to wear. He brought leather jackets and a suit to add variation to the pictures, so it would look as if he had pictures taken on different days and/or locations.
The poses my model took were poses as if he was standing on a stage, giving someone a microphone, dancing or just casually posing. I made him try to pose inviting and relaxed, as that is how Elvis poses like.

EDIT 28/11 17:00 / I've started to edit a picture I want to use on my contents page.

EDIT 05/12/2013 / A couple of days later I took a couple of christmas tree photo's to paste to the background of some images in my magazine (for example: front cover)

I took these two photos at home with my iphone. I am planning to use these on my contents page.

Planning & preparation of photoshoot

As I am making a Christmas edition for my magazine, I want my model to stand in front of a Christmas tree but I'm not able to bring one in school so I have to photoshop one behind my model so I need the same lightning for both pictures.
Photography lights made simple: classic one light portrait setups to try right now

LIGHTNING TECHNIQUES:
Lightning settings I want to use:
Softbox from slightly above
Softbox close and level with head
White reflector
Silver reflector
I definitely want to use reflectors with every lightning except from the softbox from high above as I want the photo to look professional without any unwanted shadows under eyes, nose and chin.

PHOTOGRAPHS TO TAKE:
Model side laughing (cover)
Model posing as if performing (DPS)
Model posing as if dancing (DPS)
Record

THINGS NEEDED:
For model and set:
Elvis wig
Ray Ban glasses
Black suit, performance clothes (jumpsuit)
Leather jacket

Big change about magazine

I have decided to change my magazine. I wanted to make a vintage-retro magazine from the 50 to 60s but after more research and after having started my drafts I've decided that an old magazine looks too amateur and simple, it doesn't look as much as a magazine of these days. People now wouldn't recognise it is a magazine, so I'm going to change the year and design of the magazine to the 89-90s and it's going to be better quality. New drafts are coming, front page, name, genre etc stays the same.

House style

I want to make a christmas edition of my magazine, so I have put the 'special christmas edition' writing at the top of the page. I will most likely place red and green colours on the page, yet I haven't decided how I am going to do it exactly. Also I want to place 2 small cover lines and one very big teaser which grabs the most attention.

The contents page is going to be very plain and simple with 5 images of artists which are going to appear in the magazine. I have decided to make all the images in the magazine black and white except for the cover photo as that has to attract the audience's attention.

I want the DPS to be plain with a black and white image of the model too. The text is going to be a feature article which is stated by the 'feature' writing on the top of the page. The text is going to be a journalistic feature article in first person with no direct questions asked.

Masthead designs

To be honest, it wasn't hard for me to decide what font and colour I wanted to use for my masthead. The moment I saw the magazine 'RollingStone' their masthead I fell in love with their font and way of presenting their masthead.

RollingStone has given their masthead a shadow effect which includes white lines in it with a white outline around the letters to make it look like the red letters are pushed into the block it is cut out of.

I have copied the name a bit as my masthead is going to be 'RollingRock' which has a joke in it (rolling stones - rolling rock - rock and roll). The reason I have chosen this name is because the first time you read it you know it's about rock as it both looks like rock&roll and rollingstones.

My masthead will contain the same font which is Royal Acidbath, yet I am not going to edit it as how RollingStone did as my magazine is an 80s magazine which should be more basic than a magazine from the 21. century.

Yet as I have decided to make my magazine a Christmas edition, I want to colour the font in red as that will give the page a Christmas image (Christmas colours are green and red) and red is a very attractive colour for the cover, contents page and lay out.

After having played with photoshop I have somehow managed to make a white line around the letters, yet they are transparent, which is no problem as it will give the masthead an unprofessional look which is needed for my 80s magazine.

This is how my masthead looks like at the moment, after having it edited a little bit. I wanted to add gradient to make a shadow effect yet that would be too professional and edited for my magazine. I might change some effects to the masthead later.

Photography and the Studio

THE SET AND LIGHTNING
In the studio in school they have a white or black backdrop. The white backdrop might be turned into grey with the lightning. (Backdrop = the paper on the background) Unless you want to have a shadow effect in your photograph (then you should stay closer), it is recommended to stay five to six feet away from the backdrop.

While photographing the lightning is very important. In the studio there are two big soft boxes, which soften the light that is reflected on to the model through flashlights. You can also use a white umbrella to soften the light, though soft boxes are better to use. To make sure the model or the room will not become too hot because of the lights there are fans in the soft boxes. Everything works with flashlights, the lights in the school studio are trinity flashlights. When you take a picture the flashlights will go on and off without blinding your eyes. The flashlights have the settings one to six, which decide how bright the light is going to be. Six is the brightest setting, one is the most dimmed flash. When pressing the flashlight or when taking a picture, you will hear two beeps. The second beep tells you that you are ready to take the next picture. All lights are connected with each other through infra red through a little mechanism called 'godox' which sends a signal to the transmitter from the camera to the lights, and from the lights to the lights.
On the set there are also reflectors used, which are round, rectangular or triangular objects that reflect light. They can be white, gold or silver. In school there is a gold and white one. They will help you dim the light. For example: you can remove the shadow of a persons face under their nose and lips. An assistant or your subject can hold it, you can hold it yourself or lean it on something or buy a stand made specifically to hold it.

CAMERA
There cameras in school are a Nikons D7000 18 million megapixels with a 155 millimetre lens or a Nikon D40 with 7 million mega pixels and a 150 millimetre lens. On the camera there are two buttons on the left hand: AM and S. A means 'aperture priority' and S means 'shutter priority' (focus).

Aperture Priority makes you choose how big the lens and the size of the opening in the lens gets while you take the picture. The larger the lens is, the more light it gets in. If the lens is set on Shutter it will focus automatically by itself, but when it is set on A you must focus it yourself. This works good when you want to focus on a close up, or when you want to decide how you will use your depth of feel.

Depth of feel is when the background and foreground are both focusses similar, when there is no blur in one of them. Shallow depth is that the foreground and background are both different focussed. For example: when you have 2 people and one is standing in the front and the camera is focussed on the one in the front, it is shallow depth.

When taking a picture you should look through the view of the camera, because if you look through the main screen you will not be able to see how the picture is going to be.

OWN PHOTOGRAPHY IDEAS, LIGHTING ETC

Exactly same pose, arms crossed, light directly on face, use golden reflector to remove the shadows under lips, nose and eyes

Again Elvis: again the same lightning technique: no shadow on face (reflector) and light coming from one side, the side his head is turned to. Since the magazine is going to be a Christmas edition, I want my model to stand in front of a christmas tree or in snow (snow might be photoshopped)

Magazine inspiration

Looks very artistic and suiting colours, popping front cover

Example for how I could form my double page spread

Though this is an advert, the use of their images is something i could use for my contents page or double spread. For example, I really like how the man at the top is a picture that is cut out, the right hand side of it is cut out.

Title looks very nice, good idea for mine!!.

Mojo
I like the quote and the way the title is written with a small description. Again not a lot of pictures, more text than images. Example double page spread

Magazine proposal

Magazine Proposal from EcesuOzevinASmedia

(View in full screen or watch on the slideshare website for best quality)

My magazine is going to be a vintage magazine from the 60s to 80s. The reason I've chosen to do this kind of magazine is because I want to do something different than a modern R&B or Hip Hop magazine. I want my magazine to be different and outstanding.

The Genre I've chosen for my magazine to be is Progressive Rock, Classic Rock and Rock and Roll (let's just say rock...) The artists that could be seen as examples for my magazine are Elvis, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd. Rock started around this time (1955), so it was a popular music genre to write about. A lot of teens and young adults were interested in this new music genre, that's why I think this magazine could have sold a lot around the 60s.

I am going to write a feature article (interview) written in new journalism/gonzo journalism. Gonzo Journalism is a style of writing where the journalist actually participates in the event or circumstance. A normal journalist is an objective outsider who simply observes and reports a newsworthy event, Gonzo is an active participant in or instigator of that event. In Gonzo Journalism the journalist is also considered newsworthy. The purpose of gonzo journalism would be to produce a brutally honest of highly subjective journalistic piece based on the real experience of a trained reporter writing from the inside.
For example: A normal journalist might interview drug dealer or addicts for an expose on the local drug trade, a gonzo journalist may actually participate in the shady deals and backroom exploits of a drug kingpin or a local gang.

The language I'm going to use is going to be conversational as the magazine is going to be a magazine for young people who have to stay interested, who can read the article easily without getting bored of too formal language.

I have noticed that vintage magazines have more text than pictures. Also I want to write the title of the article on the contents page very big and place a dot or rectangle in front of the text as it would be too distracting to write the title big and the first letter of the text big. The text is going to be very plain and I am going to make the background of the contents page a light brown colour so it will look as if it's written on old paper (see picture). Also I will place a quote in the middle of the text that has been said in the article or on the front cover in a teaser to draw more attention to it and make the article look more interesting.

The front cover is going to be colourful yet it has to look dusty as the quality of magazines and pictures were not as good as today 50 years ago. When I say colourful, I want the colours to be bright and outstanding yet there has to be this grey-ish or dusty tone about it. The colours have to be so bright that the whole cover looks like a drawing. I don't know how to exactly explain it, but as said, the colours should be popping and bright, but it has to look as if there is a plate of dusty glass on it.

The model on the front cover is going to be an iconic person such as Elvis or John Lennon who will be recognised and people will understand who I'm trying to picture when seeing the magazine. Also they will immediately understand what kind of magazine it is as the iconic person will tell people it is a singer. I am almost sure that I will photograph someone who is dressed as/looks like Elvis, and if that is going to be the person I well be creating, I will make a close up of the face. Also to make people sure that it is a music magazine, I am thinking about giving the model a microphone or an instrument in their hand(s).
As old magazines didn't have a lot of teasers, I will only put 2 to 4 teasers on the front cover. The fonts will be not too small or big, colourful and they have to fit into the picture, the colours have to go together with the model on the front cover.

The title is going to be RollingRock, as it has a little joke in it. It looks like Rolling Stones, also it has 'Rock Roll' in it which refers to Rock 'n' Roll. I want it to be written in groovy and retro letters (see slide 5/9) coloured in with again a colour that fits the front page as a whole. The model's head will be in front of it as it is going to be someone important and famous. It is going to be the biggest writing on the whole page as it is the most important and it has to stand out.

I want 'Nat Mags' to be the publisher of my magazine as it was established in 1910, before my magazine is going to be published. A lot of publishers are established later than when I want my magazine to be published. Also Nat Mags have published 19 magazines in the UK including Company, Cosmopolitan and Esquire, so this publisher is not a simple or unknown one.

My audience is going to be a young audience. I want the magazine to be a magazine that is popular in the high schools, colleges and universities. It has to be a magazine that all the teens and young adults talk about. The magazine might be read by 16 to 25 year olds with the same interests. It is going to be for both genders. The readers are going to be people who care a lot about the fashion that time, who go out to concerts, sock hops (school dances), drive in movies, drive in restaurants and who do a lot of activities to keep their young life busy. The music they will be listening to could be only rock, but it could also be everything else but rock while they are interesting in this new music genre. (Or the girls will just buy the magazine because Elvis (cover model) is handsome). They also might listen to boy bands like The Beatles or The Smiths.
Girls would wear skirts, levi's, penny loafers, tie dye, high wasted skirts and girly or light colours as boys would wear high wasted trousers, madras shirts (very popular that time!) or just sweaters. Haircuts would be flat-top, crew cut but especially long hair as this was considered rebellious in that time.

*** Vintage magazines are very simple yet attractive. My magazine is not going to be a magazine with a lot of pictures, colours and modernity. It is going to be interesting, pretty yet plain and simple. ***

BIG EDIT!!!! Decided to do a special CHRISTMAS EDITION of magazine

Magazine newsstand task (Planning)

In the store I took the pictures there were a lot of magazines. They are placed near the entrance of the shop which attracts the people more. The women's magazines all have pink-girly colours which attracts women more. The same magazines are put in one booth and they are behind each other on the bottom and top shelf, the middle shelves have only magazines next to eachother. This is done so it won't look too crowded and you can have a clear overview over all the magazines with the most popular magazines placed in the front. The magazines placed in front of each other's names are clearly visible and on some magazines you can even see some coverlines. Also there are separate booths placed in front of the shelves in the front and sticked to them for other magazines, which are more eye-catching.

The green box with 'recommended read' is very eye-catching and they advertise this magazine to sell it more.

The TV section's magazines have darker and simpler colours such as black, red and blue. You can recognise what kind of magazines these are as all their names have something to do with TV or Soaps. Also here there is a green box which says it's a recommended read which will attract people more to that magazine.

Audience feedback and evaluation on college magazine (Planning)

FEEDBACK THAT I GOT:
I love your front cover and contents page , your cover lines are teasers are really eye catching and easy to understand, although i think that your image should have a connection with your cover lines and teasers please. Great work overall. (Vivian)

hi, I like your front cover and content page because your front cover links to the content page because of the colours you had used which went really well and your content page looks formal and easy to read. One thing I would say is to add few more images to your content page (Natasha)

hey I really like your contents and your front cover because first of all you've got exciting teasers(headings). rather than using one artist image you used more than one which is good and shows your creativity. You haven't got too many headlines as its easy to recognise that this is a college magazine. I like the way you laid it out, your layout looks well cool. However I would say make some space for other news or pictures as with more images it could have make it more interesting for the audience to buy. On the other side your contents looks like a original contents page especially for your audience as for them it would attract them to look at it. Its well organised and proper outlined in a clear way. You've numbered it using big fonts and you've got bigger images. Overall your contents page looks like an original magazine contents page but you could have puted as i said earlier bit more images to connect with the headings rather than writing the whole thing. (Fahmi)

THINGS I'VE LEARNED
The things I have learned from the feedbacks is that I should use more images on the contents page, because that would attract people more to it. This has been said twice, so I should pay more attention to it next time.

Also someone has said that my image should have a connection with my cover lines and teasers, what is also very helpfull.

Case studies (2)

SOLID ROCK

FRONT COVER
The front cover of this magazine is very unorganized and it looks unprofessional.
There is a band of 4 people who are photographed as a wide shot, and there is a wide shot photograph of another artist on the background with an arm blended over the two images. This is very confusing for the reader as it is not very obvious which person belongs to who.
The quality of the image of the band is much higher than the quality of the picture behind them, which drops the quality of the front cover too, as it looks unprofessional.
Also the images of the artists are all small, they cover only half of the page which isn't the norm as the cover model should be covering the whole page, maybe even the masthead.
Apart from the masthead, the images make the genre of this magazine the most obvious. An arm with a metal wristband, the make up of the single artist and the fact that he is carrying an electronic guitar states that this magazine is a rock magazine.
The masthead 'Solid(metal) (heavy)Rock' which is read as Solid Rock when talking about this magazine, is the biggest writing on the cover which states that that is the most important factor. Because the words 'metal' and 'heavy' are not very important, they are written in a dark colour which is not comfortably readable, yet the words 'Solid Rock' are very obvious and outstanding. The first place the customers eyes would go is the masthead, which is very important.
At first sight the cover lines look very unorganized, as there is 'Kiss' and 'Dave Lee Roth' are written across the page, which randomly coloured teasers in different fonts above it. But when you pay attention to the structure of the front cover, it is seen that 'Kiss' and 'Dave Lee Roth' are written next to the artists with that name. This could have done neater or there isn't even need for it, as it looks very unprofessional and unorganised.
The colour used the most on the frontcover is yellow, which is suppressed by the yellow sides of the line and the big yellow written masthead. If the cover would have been organised better, this would have drawn the public's attention, but there are too many colours used on the front cover which is seen in the background and masthead.

CONTENTS PAGE
According to the front cover, the contents page of this magazine is very basic and clean. Everything is neatly organised and put in place, except for the page numbers which are not written in order. The contents page does not contain any images which reflects the fact that this is an old magazine as most of the magazines I have crowded front covers but calm contents pages.
All the fonts and font  sizes are the same on this page which makes it, again, neat and organised. Also the title's of the pages have a clear description with what the reader should expect from the article.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD
This double page spread is also very simple and neat. The only colours used are black, white and the image which containt red lightning. The journalism is in 4 columns with journalism written in first person which is inviting to the audience. The whole page contains journalism about Deff Leppard, which is a rock band. The way they have dressed and their hair is made up shows that this magazine is about rock. Also the dark colours used show easily the genre of this magazine.

MEDIA KIT
Weirdly enough there is no information on the internet about this magazine, therefore I couldn't find a media kit.
