KING OF ROCK&ROLL REBORN?
I am waiting in
Los Angeles in an over-stuffed flamboyant house – the walls are full of music
records and posters. I lose track of time while looking around me as there is
so much to see. It could be the house of a music-obsessed teenager, but in fact
it is the house of John himself.
He opened the door
for me with a green health drink in his hand, giant hazel eyes sparkling as
much as his giant golden ring he is wearing on his ring-finger. As always his
hair was perfectly combed with every single string of hair in its place.
Wearing leather and dark clothes made him look exactly like how I imagined him
to look like: the younger and more relaxed version of the King of Rock &
Roll.
What everyone
really wants to know about John is why he has chosen to imitate such a
historical and legendary character as Elvis Presley. Because folks, be honest:
don’t they look alike?
How could John
have imagined that his music career would grow to this level? The world got to
know about him for the first time when seeing him on billboards all across Los
Angeles.
‘’Yeah man, I was
walking on the street, just about to buy some records for my collection, when a
lady came up to me and asked if I wanted to appear on a billboard for the
memorial of Elvis’’, he says with a half smile and it reminds me again how much
he looks like Elvis and why all the girls have fallen for John.
He claims to
always have had a bound with music and it was his dream to become big.
‘’People on the
street started to recognize me and girls came up to me asking for my signature.
I then understand this was an opportunity I couldn’t miss.’’
With the little
money he had, he recorded a tune, which became his first hit single, and gave
copies away on the streets of Los Angeles with the hope someone would find and
sign him.
‘’I had given up
hope after a month with no money left, when a man found me last year and
actually wanted to sign me. The guy’s name was Samuel. Samuel Cornelius
Phillips.’’
John nodded his
head as I tried to stutter that he was also the producer of Elvis Presley.
‘’I’m blessed;
Samuel has put so much effort in me. This was when I understood I have a
connection with Elvis: my biggest idol.’’
All alone he
struggled through the music industry, but becoming big wasn’t hard for him as
he had the looks and charm, the voice and appearance to steal every girl’s
heart.
‘’Nope. No family,
I hadn’t even any relatives I knew around me. My friends have always been next
to me, and they still are. Sometimes they even play behind me on stage.
‘’Everything went
really fast the moment my first single came out. People started to call me
‘Second Elvis’ as I had been known for the first time as his duplicate.’’
As I observe him I
try to compare him to Elvis Presley. Young and talented, confident and smart in
the things he says. Yep, the King of Rock & Roll must have been reborn.
‘’Don’t say that.
I can never cope to the actual legend, no one can. He was one in a million and
will forever be. I’m just making my own dream come true. Music is my passion.
Elvis is my statue. Samuel is my hero.’’
His first single
‘’Let Me Be Your Daddy’’ was very successful, but his second tune ‘I Want Her,
Santa’ was the one that took place in the top 10 Christmas Hits. And not only
did it hit the top 10; John also got to sing it on the Christmas Parade
yesterday.
‘’That was truly
amazing. The crowd, the stage, the atmosphere… The moment I entered the stage
and I heard the crowd scream, or should I say women’’, he laughs, ‘’and before
holding my hands up to greet them I immediately prayed to God and thanked him.
I almost bursted into tears when the band started to play and the crowd’s voice
got louder.’’
Though John is new
and upcoming, yet very popular, he has released only two songs. How is it going
to be with the tour he’s starting in January?
‘’That’s what
makes the tour so unique. The audience doesn’t have a clue about the songs I’m
going to perform.’’
The tour is going
to last for 1 month.
‘’Yeah baby! Los
Angeles, Vegas, New York, America… Here I come!’’ is what he yells and throws
his fists in the air.
It wouldn't be fair for Jama to say he is trying to copy Elvis, yet the fact that he is signed by the same producer, looks and dances like him might confuse the public in what he is trying to do. Yet be honest people... Could you resist John Jama?
